Web Design is fundamentally one of the most important topics at a marketing meeting in today’s web dominant world. We spend more time on websites and our social media platforms than we do anywhere else in our spare time. It’s scary to think about how our world and how we spend our time has changed in the past 10 years. In the past 2 years you’ve seen a trend of more people moving their time and interests to their mobile device. Most of us never think about web design or how we landed upon a web page to potentially buy or simply research something. The path that leads us to any end result is never looked at by the typical consumer.

Having a Marketing degree with years of web design experience enables me to create those paths that consumers tend to go on. It’s that mindset from the get go that sets web design companies a part. Some create websites, and others like Memorywalk have a goal in mind. To gain awareness of a service or product, or to put a consumer into a funnel where they end up learning something about your brand, or referring someone else to your business. When you think of marketing you shouldn’t just be thinking about creating a website, you should be thinking of how you can generate more business.

Memorywalk spends time getting to know each business it works with and in most cases things like advanced SEO campaigns and social media marketing are left for the larger businesses, but in some cases even small mom and pops can benefit from spending a portion of their day working on their brand online. If your business is looking to take the leap into a serious web presence contact Memorywalk. We proudly are Saint John, New Brunswicks web design company.

Videography is an art form. Like Photography, it’s not easy to master. It takes countless hours rendering, editing, and exporting video files even when you’re a seasoned pro. So why put in critical hours trying to do it yourself when you can hire Memorywalk to create your next marketing video? If you’re a small business looking to spread the word about your brand or product, look no further. Memorywalk owner, Jeremy McLean, personally takes on all videography projects. Jeremy films, edits, and screencasts until he is blue in the face, and then he’ll film, edit, and screencast some more for good measure. It’s not perfect until it’s perfect!

Take a look at Jeremy’s most recent sponsorship film titled “the food program”. It’s a video he created for a non-profit organization, Friends for Life. They are currently looking to raise money for families who simply have nothing and are in unbearable circumstances. Jeremy filmed the footage in Yamasa, Dominican Republic.

Top brands use video to speak visually to potentially clients and partners. It’s a great way to showcase products and it shows that you’re bigger than a mom n’ pop. If you are a mom n’ pop then it shows you’re a smart one! If you’re interested in taking your business to the next level with a professional marketing video contact Memorywalk today!

It’s typical for businesses in New Brunswick to look at marketing as a cost instead of a return on investment. With traditional media it’s very tough to measure how your marketing dollars are working for you, but in today’s day in age, with internet advertising we can track visitors and really see the impact of an online campaign you’re doing, or even a coupon you physically give out that is entered on your Facebook page or website. It’s becoming more and more measurable. But does this work for everyone? Of course it doesn’t, and here’s why.

I and the majority of the world love beautiful things. We are all attracted to different things but beautiful stands out. A beautiful object, person, or even scenery can put a person in awe. We are drawn to beautiful things by nature and our eye will not lie to us. We all would love to drive that Porsche 911 or date the supermodel that doesn’t even exist in the magazines. I have never met a person who thought sunsets or sunrises are ugly. The simple fact is we all like beautiful things. When it comes to creating a brand, and your website is part of that brand, you want everyone to be attracted to it. Your brand and website should be beautiful.

When I took a glance at Orange Sprocket’s (Digital Creative Agency from Fredericton, NB @orangesprocket) latest redesign (April 11, 2012) I loved the look and feel. Everything was sharpe, it was simple to navigate through and it left me with a great deal of confidence. That is why they do projects for the Salesforce’s and Disney’s of the world. They really know how to make a brand look beautiful. I love co-founder Bill McGrath’s quote at the bottom of their site:

Never underestimate the influence of creativity. It’s an agency’s most valuable asset, and it truly is rare. People are attracted to beautiful things. Design is as important as function for them. Anyone can be taught to manage a client account but not everyone can create beautiful things.

This paragraph sums up why your business should never look at web design and any part of your brand as just another cost. Doing it right is a return on investment. The companies who see creating their brand as a beautiful and engaging masterpiece will flourish because people will be drawn to it. It’s of course not the only factor that makes a business successful, but it’s one of the main ingredients.

Memorywalk is a much smaller shop than OrangeSprocket but the principles are the same. We want to make Saint John, New Brunswick and beyond beautiful! The importance of design is crucial to stand out from the crowd. The next time you think marketing and web design, think Memorywalk and beautiful!

Even though we are a web development company, this post will discuss our favourite websites in the Saint John, NB area that we “haven’t” designed. Memorywalk is not a be all end all web design company, and we often applaud the work of others in the community whether it be in the field of web design or technology. We love modern and innovative ideas, and we tend to really appreciate the work which has “that something special”. Sometimes you cannot put a finger on what it is, but since web design is what we’re about, we are going to try! Here are some of my favourite web designs here in the port city of Saint John, NB!

O’Leary’s Pub

Wow, when I visited this site I was blown away. It not only grabs your attention right from the get go with its powerful green colours, but it also pleasantly leads my eyes downward to read the rest of the homepage. The site has a modern yet neighbourly feel to it since they included a picture of the bar somewhat faded in the background. Some nice touches are the upcoming events section in a unique shaped box that is consistent with the rest of the site (we love consistency), the great social media icons, and the great use of showing off their brand by sticking to their colours.

Crossfit Saint John

It’s almost easy for me to pick out a WordPress site these days because I do quite a bit of research on new themes and plugins. When I first came to the Crossfit Saint John website it had WordPress written all over it. It’s well designed, well spaced with very little clutter. This leaves the site with a clear message. No one likes fluff these days so I applaud Crossfit Saint John for keeping it modern and giving people what they want. Bravo!

Sociallogical

Sociallogical not only has a powerhouse social media team to educate businesses how to succeed through the new social playgrounds, but they also have a great website. For starters, they use beautiful illustrations and they keep things simple. Everyone that comes to their site reads their intro because it’s designed in a way that your eyes jump right to it. The entire site is well balanced and they keep their colors consistent throughout. I would like to see their teams pics as illustrations to go with the rest of the site, but knowing this beautiful site is another WordPress gem gives it an “A”.

So those are my top three Saint John, New Brunswick websites. I can’t tell you how often I cringed while looking through roughly a 100 different websites in the past 2 days, as most are very outdated, but I think my top 3 deserve the special mention. All 3 take their web presence seriously and it gives them a professional edge and brings some excitement to the company. If you appreciate good web design and have a favourite in the Saint John and surrounding area, let us know in the comments!!

Change is not always easy for a business because there are many moving factors. Google Apps may not be for every business, but if your a small company, consisting of 10 or less people, and you don’t have a “set in your ways” office, then it’s a MUST have.

To give an overview of what Google Apps is: A suite of web based tools including email, calendar, documents, and others that help your business store and share your information in the most effective way possible. I whole heartedly believe in Google Apps, and that is why I use it for Memorywalk. It’s really a no brainer after trying pretty much everything there is to offer. I’ve been set up with Microsoft Exchange and using Outlook, etc. I’ve also used Apple’s mail and calendar that comes pre-installed on their machines. Lastly, I’ve tried open source applications like Thunderbird. None really come close to the efficiency and ease of use as Google Apps.

Every business needs a website and a domain name that reflects their business. For example, if your business name is Explorer United you would want your website and domain to be explorerunited.com, or .ca. Memorywalk specializes in taking that domain, and creating a beautiful and high impact SEO website, but we also set businesses up on Google Apps so they can start receiving email at sales@explorerunited.com, or jim@explorerunited.com. This is just the beginning. We enable your business to be connected via shared calendars and contacts. We also show you how to write and share documents with coworkers or even clients. We wouldn’t use it if it wasn’t the easiest and best solution out there. Clients of ours love its ease of use.

You are probably wondering how much would something like this cost? It seems very corporate and connected with its sharing capabilities. Well, it’s FREE for organizations with 10 or less employees. We charge a set up fee to get you off your feet and provide some instruction videos if you ever get stuck. Then you are off to the races!

You can broaden your customer base and effectively market your business online. It’s also just a great feeling to see your brand out there for the world to see. However, after a few months or even a year later, you may begin to ask yourself, how do I update the website? Do we call the people who made our website? The simple answer is yes, but that can be quite expensive, especially if its for a small task like adding content to a new page or writing a new blog post. These types of updates should be easy and Memorywalk believes they should not cost a dime!

Memorywalk creates every site with an easy to use WordPress backend to enable businesses to take over the site when its complete. That means your not getting sucked into paying more and more money down the road for simple text updates to your site. We provide our clients with a short training session and will leave you with a video that you can refer to if you get stuck. There are many companies, most actually, that only build what you ask for, and are not looking out for the customer from the get go, simply because that means more money. Memorywalk carries a different philosophy and that means creating products that we know the customer will want, and essentially needs in order to keep costs low while getting a premium product.

We are always available for updates at a very reasonable rate, and there are things like updating WordPress to its newest version, keeping your theme updated, and even updating the look and feel of your site every few years, that should be done on a regular basis. Your website needs to be kept up to date for security and to also stay modern. These are essentially the only costs to look forward to down the road as your business grows on the web. If you want to add other services, that’s fine, but these are the only mission critical ones for website updates.

You now know what Memorywalk stands for and what to expect from us. If you ever have any questions feel free to leave a comment, or contact us for a free proposal. We are not the cheapest or most expensive, but we are Saint John, New Brunswick’s most reliable and down to earth web design for your web development needs.
